How to Naturally Give Your Pet Relief with CBD

on August 04, 2021

When our pets hurt, we hurt! The most prescribed pain medications for pets also come with lots of side effects. So, many pet owners are looking for natural pain relief for pets. We’ve got you covered!

Here are the facts on CBD for dogs and the relief it can offer your pet.

What Medicines are Used for Pain?

Many of the medications used for pet pain are similar to those used for humans. However, you should never give your pet human medication, as it may contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs.

Three main classes of pain medications for pets exist: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroidal medications (often administered by injection), and opioids (derived from morphine but formulated specifically for pet relief).

Steroids also get used for relief from skin conditions in dogs (more on that later!).

Each of these medications has its own list of side effects. NSAIDs commonly cause digestive problems and ulcers, particularly if taken for extended periods of time. Steroids can cause behavioral changes and opioids are particularly addictive (just like they are in humans).

CBD, on the other hand, does not appear to be addictive, and does not seem to have any side effects if taken in correct doses.

This means a number of pet owners would rather use natural pet relief CBD.

Short-term Pain Management with CBD

After an injury, surgery, or other short-term problem with accompanying pain, CBD provides a safe alternative to other pain medications.

Managing inflammation plays an important role in recovery. Pain and inflammation may cause a dog distress, but also to lick or scratch more. Reducing inflammation, along with rest, can help speed recovery.

So, when your pet has an injury or surgery, consider CBD as part of a recovery management program.

Seizure Management with CBD

While seizures do not, in themselves, cause pain, they can be distressing to witness.

CBD for dogs may offer some relief from seizures. Human studies are also underway for the treatment of seizures. For dogs, clinical trials have shown a reduction in the frequency of seizures in dogs when treated with CBD.

Cancer Treatment with CBD

While CBD is currently being studied (in humans) for its potential to reduce the size of certain tumors, extending life expectancies, it is not a stand-alone treatment for cancer.

In both dogs and humans, however, CBD can help with pain management in cancer treatment and relief from the digestive distress and loss of appetite associated with many cancer-treating medications.

Based on these results, CBD can be a great addition to a cancer treatment protocol. It’s a good idea to double-check with your vet to be sure CBD will not interfere with any cancer medications being used for your dog, but such interferences are rare.

End of Life Pain Management

When it comes to end of life care for our pets, we want them to have as many good years as we can. For that, pain management can play an important part in extending the time we have with our dogs.

CBD can offer relief. It helps calm, soothe, and relieve pain for our pet, even in those last weeks and days we have together.

Pain Relief from Osteoarthritis

The biggest risks from pain medications come from using them long-term. That’s particularly bad news for the approximately one in five dogs with osteoarthritis (OA). Regardless of age, OA can cause pain, inflammation, and joint deterioration.

Results from studies with CBD for OA in dogs look promising. Not only does CBD have a very low incidence of side effects, but it also may be more effective in managing pain than other available medications and pain treatments.

While the exact mechanism is unknown, it is thought that CBD works with the endocannabinoid system in dogs, just like in humans. The endocannabinoid system has receptors throughout the entire body, in both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system. By working with the endocannabinoid system, CBD helps restore homeostasis--essentially, calming the nervous system itself.

The restoration of calm in the nervous system, as seen in the treatment of arthritic conditions, may also be why CBD may offer relief from so many other conditions in our pets, including:

  • Anxiety,
  • Behavioral problems,
  • Skin irritation or loss of fur,
  • Hip or joint problems,
  • And back problems.

Overall, the use of CBD, in many cases, appears to help restore that bounce, youthfulness, and joy in our dogs.
