How Much CBD Oil Should I Give My Dog?

on April 07, 2021

CBD oil provides you with a safe, natural remedy for many ailments for your dog. However, dosing can be a little confusing.

To make it simple, we break down here, with the points to consider on how much CBD Oil should I give my dog...

1. Label Suggestions

Different CBD products have different concentrations. In dosing your dog, choose a product for the size of your pet, then read all of the package instructions carefully.

Many chewables or treats with CBD have different milligrams for different weights, so be sure to order the correct potency. CBD oils are a great way to get the exact concentration you need for your dog. Unlike treats or chewables where you might have to break the product into smaller pieces, liquid CBD oils allow for quick, correct dosing.

Whatever product you choose, familiarize yourself with the label instructions first.

2. Determine Your Purpose

Do you want to treat your dog with CBD oil for a medical condition or for general well-being?

Depending on the condition, you may need to give your dog the lower or higher recommended dosage for your dog’s size.

For example, if treating your dog for behavioral issues or anxiety, the best CBD for dog anxiety might be a very low dose. You can start with as little as one-quarter of the tincture recommendation, administered at the same time every day, and then see how your dog does. You can slowly administer more, if needed, up to the recommended dosage.

In treating dog anxiety with CBD oil, another effective method is to combine daily low dosage, but then administer some additional CBD oil (up to the full recommended dosage) as needed for acute anxiety, such as car rides, separation, fireworks, or whatever situations that might stress your furry friend.

Other doggy medical conditions that may be treated effectively with CBD oil include:

  • Inflammation, even chronic inflammation
  • Joint problems or joint pain
  • Arthritis
  • Pain relief
  • Allergies or skin conditions
  • Nausea
  • Digestive problems
  • Car sickness or sea sickness
  • Seizures
  • Symptoms of cancer

If you are treating your pet for a specific medical condition, we recommend you consult your veterinarian, particularly if your dog is taking any other medications or has any other medical conditions.

CBD oil is generally considered safe and sold over-the-counter (OTC), but liver problems, kidney problems, heart problems, or certain other medical conditions may preclude using CBD oil without veterinary recommendation and oversight.

3. Standard Dosing Guide

As a general rule, the CBD dosage for a dog is a math problem that looks like this:

Weight of dog times (x) milligrams (mg) CBD in each milliliter (ml) of oil = correct dosage.

A generally safe rule of thumb is about 0.2mg of CBD per pound. If a formula has about 2 mg CBD per ml and your dog weighs about 20 pounds, that dosing guide would look like this:

20 lbs (at .2mg/pound) x 2mg/ml = 2 ml dosage

That’s because a 20 lb dog, times .2mg means the dog could have 4 mg CBD oil, and there is 2 mg in each ml of that product. To get 4 mg you then only need 2 ml.

But if math was never your strong suit, never fear! Package inserts and veterinary consultation (as discussed above) can help you get the dosage correct.

If you are worried you might give your dog too much CBD oil, particularly for small or toy breeds, you can always start with too little and work your way up.

5. Choose the Best CBD Oil for Your Dog

Concentrated CBD oils and tinctures may cost a little more than some other products, but their potency means that the product lasts longer.

Reputable CBD Oil for dogs does not contain THC, is specifically formulated for your pet, and is manufactured without additives, chemicals, and solvents which may leave harmful residues for your best furry friend.

A pet CBD product company should also be willing to provide you with lab reports verifying the quality and ingredients in their products.

Our organic, made-in-the-USA Dog CBD oils also come in flavors your pet will love--so you’ll get the correct dosage for your dog and a product you can trust, but also a treat they will willingly take! Happy wagging tails are on their way with Bad Dog CBD!
