3 Reasons to Use CBD for Dogs with Arthritis

on July 13, 2021

Approximately 1 in 4 dogs has osteoarthritis. But a diagnosis of arthritis doesn’t have to mean the end of your beloved pup’s comfortable years. New and expanding research suggests that CBD may help dogs with arthritis live and move more comfortably.

Here are 3 reasons to use CBD for dogs with arthritis, as well as the answers to some of the common FAQs for dogs and arthritis.

Reason 1: CBD May Be Safer than NSAIDs

The most common drugs for treating pain in dogs are NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Just like the NSAIDs ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen sodium (Aleve)  for humans, these drugs fight inflammation.

NOTE: Human NSAID medications should never be given to animals.

Unfortunately, NSAIDs also have side effects. By some accounts, “the number of adverse side effects from NSAIDs reported to the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine is higher than for any other veterinary drug currently prescribed.”

The biggest concern with NSAIDs: renal (kidney) failure.

Risks are higher for older dogs, but also older dogs are also more likely to have osteoarthritis. That’s the crux of the dilemma.

Is Renal Failure Treatable?

In some cases, yes, kidney trouble can be treated. But generally, renal failure is fatal.

What Can You Give Your Dog for Arthritis, Which Will Not Harm Kidneys?

If you’d rather not give your dog NSAIDs, CBD may be a safer alternative. In some cases, CBD may lower the number of NSAIDs needed, or replace them altogether.

Reason 2: CBD May Help Prevent Further Deterioration

Osteoarthritis is characterized by a deterioration of the joints. In most dogs, it occurs in the hips, knees or spine, but any joint may be affected.

CBD may help protect joints, decreasing pain and even possibly preventing further deterioration.

Is Osteoarthritis the Same Thing as Arthritis?

The terms osteoarthritis (OA) and arthritis are often used interchangeably. However, they are technically not the same thing. Arthritis is an inflammatory condition, and osteoarthritis is the damage to the joints caused by arthritis.

Is Arthritis in Dogs Genetic?

While it is not known for certain, it is suspected that arthritic conditions in dogs may frequently be genetic. That’s why certain breeds are more prone to joint problems than others. Still, even totally mixed mutts can still develop osteoarthritis.

Can You Prevent Arthritis in Dogs?

It may be possible to slow or prevent the development of arthritis and osteoarthritis in dogs. Not only may CBD protect joints, but especially when combined with such joint health ingredients as glucosamine and chondroitin

At Bad Dog CBD, our hip & joint formulas contain ingredients from green-lipped mussels, which contain many additional vital joint nutrients. (Available here, with or without CBD)

What Are Green-Lipped Mussels?

Green-lipped mussels are shellfish from New Zealand used to create medicine. They’re naturally rich in enzymes, vitamins, antioxidants, Omega-3 fatty acids and glucosamine and chondroitin.

Are Green-Lipped Mussels Good for Dogs?

Yes, used in food, treats, or supplements, green-lipped mussels have been used to help dogs with arthritis. So long as the dog is not allergic to shellfish, they are considered safe for dogs.

Reason 3: CBD Has Additional Health Benefits For Dogs

Unlike medications, CBD has additional health benefits. It may be neuroprotective, assisting dogs with such conditions as epilepsy. It helps improve digestive health and decreases allergic reactions, leaving a glossier, healthier coat.

When you use CBD for dogs you do not just treat arthritis, you treat your whole furry family member.

What Are Some Early Signs of Arthritis in Dogs?

Even if a dog does not yet have the degeneration of osteoarthritis, you may notice that your furball doesn’t quite romp like he used to.

Other early signs include:

  • Unwillingness to be touched
  • Irritability
  • Tiredness
  • Behavioral changes
  • Reluctance to move
  • Generally slowing down
  • Licking, biting, or favoring a joint area

You know your pup better than anyone. You will likely be the first to notice when she’s not acting like herself.

What Can You Do When You Suspect Your Dog Has Arthritis?

You can take your dog to the vet for a diagnosis.

But since dog CBD is good for dogs with arthritis and good for dogs in general, you can also go ahead and start giving your dog treats specially formulated for joint health.
